Talk to Yourself

Talk to Yourself (It’s Not Weird, It’s Science)

We’ve all been told that talking to yourself is a little… unusual. But here’s the secret: it’s not only normal, it’s actually healthy. In fact, research shows that talking out loud, especially in the third person, can help rewire your brain, reduce anxiety, and build resilience.

So yes, you can be your own hype person whenever you need it!

Why Third-Person Self-Talk Works

When you talk to yourself in the third person (using your own name), something fascinating happens in your brain. Instead of drowning in emotions, you create just enough distance to think clearly.

For example:

  • Instead of: “I can’t do this presentation, I’m too nervous.”

  • Try: “[name], you’ve got this. You’ve prepared. You know what you’re talking about.”

This small shift helps your brain see the situation from a calmer, more rational perspective. Almost like you’re coaching a friend. That mental distance reduces the intensity of stress and anxiety, allowing you to respond instead of react.

Being Your Own Hype Person

Imagine if you had someone by your side, cheering you on all day:

  • “You’re doing amazing.”

  • “You’ve gotten through worse. You can handle this.”

  • “Look at you showing up today. That’s strength.”

That person can be you.

Hype-self-talk reminds your brain of what’s true: that you are capable, strong, and worthy. And the more you practice it, the more natural it becomes.

Practical Ways to Use Self-Talk

Before a stressful moment
Say: “[Name], you are prepared for this. You don’t have to be perfect, just present.”

When anxiety shows up
Say: “[Name], this feeling will pass. You are safe. You can breathe through this.”

When celebrating progress
Say: “[Name], look at you! You handled that so well. I’m proud of you.”

When facing something scary
Say: “[Name], I know you’re nervous, but you’re stronger than you feel right now. One step at a time.”

The Science of Rewiring

Every time you practice positive self-talk, you strengthen neural pathways in your brain. Over time, this makes it easier to access calm, confidence, and resilience instead of spiraling into panic.

Think of it like training a muscle. The more you lift it, the stronger it gets.

Takeaway

Talking to yourself isn’t weird. It’s powerful. It’s brain science. And it’s one of the most underrated tools for managing stress and anxiety.

So next time you catch yourself spiraling, pause and step into coach mode. Speak to yourself with kindness, encouragement, and compassion. Be the voice you need to hear.

Because your best hype person has been with you all along.
